Bubba Watson won’t be playing at Quail Hollow in May, according to a tweet from his verified Twitter account.
A few hours after one of the world’s top players backed out of his commitment to play in the Wells Fargo Championship, the tournament picked up another big name.
Phil Mickelson informed Wells Fargo officials Wednesday afternoon that he will play in the tournament May 1-4 at Charlotte’s Quail Hollow Club. He was joined by Lee Westwood, Darren Clark and Jimmy Walker.
But earlier in the day, Masters champion Bubba Watson, who had previously committed to play, changed his mind.
Three days after winning at Augusta National, Watson said on his verified Twitter account that the Charlotte tournament “is one of my (favorite) stops on tour. Won’t make it this year but will be back next year!”
Watson had previously committed to play in the tournament before winning the Masters last weekend for a second time in three years. He also didn’t play in Charlotte in 2012, the same year he won his first Masters. He played at Quail Hollow in 2013, missing the cut.
The Wells Fargo tournament, while usually attracting most of the world’s top players, has a built-in scheduling disadvantage by being played one week before the Players Championship, which is why world No. 2 Adam Scott doesn’t play in Charlotte.
Players have until April 25 to enter the Wells Fargo tournament, which now has 14 of the world’s top 32 players. As of Wednesday, No. 8 Mickelson, and No. 10 Rory McIlroy are the highest-ranked players who have committed to the tournament. Other top players who usually play in Charlotte but have yet to enter include Jason Day, Henrik Stenson, Matt Kuchar and Sergio Garcia.
