'The Price is Right' to 'The Late Late Show': Drew Carey and Craig Ferguson make an April Fools' Day switch

Drew Carey isn't lacking for television jobs these days, but he's taking on an additional one anyway
.

It's only for one night, though, and for a very specific occasion: April Fools' Day. The host of CBS' weekday game show staple "The Price Is Right" and Season 18 contestant on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" trades places with the host of CBS' "The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson" as the former "The Drew Carey Show" co-stars preside over each other's programs Tuesday (April 1).

The stunt is one that broadcast networks attempt every so often. A memorable instance was in 2003, when Katie Couric and Jay Leno swapped time periods on NBC for a day. Leno filled in for Couric in the co-anchor role she had then on "Today," while she assumed his place on "Tonight," opening monologue and all.

In the case of Carey and Ferguson, their skills might be a bit more evenly matched, though each still will have his challenges.

A big appeal of Carey as Bob Barker's "The Price Is Right" successor is his interaction with contestants. His improvisational skills factor in, since he never quite knows what he'll get when a player joins him - and improv certainly is something Carey knows well, also considering his "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" tenure.

The amiable Carey's interactions with late-night guests on the Ferguson show, including show business legend Carl Reiner and veteran rocker Joan Jett, are likely to be harmless ... though one might wonder how he'll get along with Ferguson's perpetually snarky skeleton-robot sidekick, "Geoff."
Ferguson is famous for being edgy in his own right, and for his stream-of-consciousness thinking that often takes off-ramps from the typical highway of celebrity interviews. How that will work with players on "The Price Is Right" could prove intriguing, though Ferguson is smart enough to know the game is the thing.

For him, that doesn't apply only to the April Fools' Day tradeoff: Starting this fall, Ferguson also will host the syndicated weekday "Celebrity Name Game" - so to a degree, "The Price Is Right" is a trial run.

However he and Carey fare on each other's stages, though, they'll know they get to go back to their day (or night) jobs soon afterward.

Senate Blocks Resolution Honoring Farm Worker Rights Leader Cesar Chavez

Resolutions, which tend to be largely symbolic, often get the nod without much fanfare.
But in bitterly divided Congress, even resolutions can run into opposition and bickering between Republicans and Democrats.
So it was with a resolution pushed by Sen. Robert Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat, honoring the late labor rights leader Cesar Chavez.
The proposed resolution noted that Chavez, who would have been 87 on March 31, started out in a poor farm worker family, had to leave school after the eighth grade to help his parents and rose to fame by fighting successfully for better farm working conditions, wages, housing and the elimination of child labor.
But Republicans blocked it after Democrats refused their demand that they also include in the resolution mention of how Chavez pushed for tighter border security and saw undocumented immigrants as detrimental to U.S. workers.
Menendez was a member of the so-called Gang of Eight’s comprehensive immigration bill, a bipartisan measure that passed in June and included stricter border security and expanded foreign worker visas.
“Had [the Senate Gang of Eight bill] passed, it would have been adverse to farmworkers who are in this country working hard, needs pay raises and need better job opportunities,” said Jeff Sessions, an Alabama Republican, as he blocked the resolution, according to Politico. “I think these are important parts of Mr. Chavez’s career.”
Menendez fired off an angry statement after the resolution failed.
“It’s really shameful that we can pass, you know, commemorative resolutions on some of the most insignificant things,” Menendez said. “But on the life of someone who changed the course of this country for millions of Latinos who understand that life and history and would want to see that life commemorated, that there can be continuing objections [for] eight years.”
It long has been known that Chavez, indeed, felt strong opposition to undocumented immigrants, believing that they undermined U.S. workers and labor strikes.
His cousin, Manuel Chavez, oversaw an effort called the “wet line,” which involved setting up dozens of tents along the U.S.-Mexico border and staffing them with about 300 members of the United Farm Workers, the union he helped found. The union workers stopped border crossers and tried to deter them from entering the U.S.
Other labor unions, at the time, typically also opposed illegal immigration, seeing it as competition.
But Chavez and other union officials later softened their stance – particularly as union membership declined – and backed amnesty programs and sought to recruit undocumented immigrants as union members

Bobby Parnell has tear in elbow

New York Mets closer Bobby Parnell has a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and might need surgery, the team announced Tuesday.
The Mets said Parnell received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his elbow and will rest for approximately two weeks before undergoing further evaluation, when the determination will be made whether he will have surgery.
The injury means 36-year-old Jose Valverde is likely to take over as closer in an already thin bullpen.
Parnell complained of tightness in his right forearm after Monday's season-opening loss to the Washington Nationals. The Mets said he was examined Tuesday at the Hospital for Special Surgery, had an MRI and was diagnosed with a partial tear of the right medial collateral ligament.
He blew a save opportunity in Monday's 10-inning loss, squandering a one-run lead in the ninth inning. It was his first save opportunity since a neck injury that required surgery and sidelined him for the final two months last season.
The Mets will promote veteran reliever Kyle Farnsworth from the minors to replace Parnell, who will be placed on the disabled list.
In another roster move, New York will promote infielder Wilmer Flores as a temporary roster replacement for second baseman Daniel Murphy, who is on paternity leave.
Parnell's velocity sagged throughout spring training as he attempted to bounce back from a herniated disk. The 29-year-old had a 2.16 ERA and 22 saves last season in his first full-time stint as New York's closer.
Valverde logged 1 1/3 perfect relief innings in a setup role Monday, striking out three. The three-time All-Star had nine saves last year with the Detroit Tigers and has 286 career saves over 12 seasons.
The Mets already are without sidelined ace Matt Harvey, who is likely to miss the entire season following elbow surgery Oct. 22 on a partial tear of his right ulnar collateral ligament.
Several pitchers have torn elbow ligaments this year, including Atlanta's Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy, Arizona's Patrick Corbin, Detroit's Bruce Rondon and Oakland's Jarrod Parker. Braves pitcher Cory Gearrin is being examined for a ligament injury.

'60 Minutes' admits 'audio editing error' in Tesla report

The battery-powered Tesla Model S is one of the world’s fastest and quietest luxury cars, but you might not know the latter if you watched the "60 Minutes" interview with Tesla founder Elon Musk that first aired on Sunday.

Now CBS says it regrets the "error" that led to that impression.
Following an introductory segment by Scott Pelley, whose wife owns a Model S, there is a series of shots provided by Tesla of a Model S driving down a road accompanied by the out-of-sync sounds of an internal combustion engine and the shifting of a transmission.
The Model S has neither of these things.
Instead, it is propelled by a single electric motor that emits little more than a quiet whirring noise, which can also be heard under some, but not all, of the images. The revving engine noise is also used with several shots of a stationary car’s interior, which was filmed in a studio setting.
Later in the report, footage of a Model S travelling through Norway’s Lærdal Tunnel again features the sounds of an engine in the background. The footage, also from Tesla, is presented on the company’s YouTube page with completely different audio that’s more in line with the actual sound of the car.
Several viewers noticed the discrepancies in the broadcast, and they were also noted by popular automotive blog Jalopnik.com. The clips in question can be seen beginning at the 17:39 mark in the "60 Minutes" replay posted on the CBS website. At least they could at the time of this writing.
On Monday afternoon, a CBS representative issued a statement to FoxNews.com saying, “our video editor made an audio editing error in our report about Elon Musk and Tesla last night. We regret the error and it is being corrected online.”
As far as Tesla is concerned, the auto maker has decided to remain as quiet on the issue as its cars actually are and offered

Kevin Ollie And Jim Calhoun Embrace After UConn Clinches Final Four Berth

UConn's basketball program seems to be in good hands with coach Kevin Ollie on the bench. In just the second season since he took over for legendary coach Jim Calhoun, Ollie has the Huskies heading to the Final Four.
The past and present of UConn basketball shared a heartwarming moment after the No. 7 Huskies' victory over No. 4 Michigan State in the Elite Eight at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.
Calhoun retired just two months before the 2012-13 season and was succeeded by Ollie. A UConn player during the early 1990s, Ollie had been one of Calhoun's assistant coaches for two years. He was initially given only a seven-month interim contract but it didn't take long for UConn to give him a five-year contract extension. The Huskies finished that season 20-10 but were banned from the NCAA Tournament for poor Academic Progress Rate scores. A year later, they're back in the Final Four.
A day before the 2014 East regional final, Ollie said Calhoun was "like a second father to me," per Fox Sports. After the clock struck zero on Sunday, Calhoun certainly looked like a proud father.
